Reality television is ridiculous and we all know this, but for some reason we find it to be very entertaining. I remember the first reality TV show that I ever watched and it was Big Brother. Ever since that show came out around 2000, we have seen more and more "reality" shows. Not only have we seen more, their ridiculous drama has escalated as well. One thing that I find very interesting is that the people on these shows become famous for their stupidity or for their drunken mishaps.
A very popular reality show (on MTV) is Jersey Shore. This show is the the definition of ridiculous drama. The girls fight each other, the boyfriends cheat on the girlfriends, they go out and get drunk all the time, they get arrested and some days they go to the beach. There are 8 people that live in a house, 4 girls and 4 boys. They are all from the New Jersey area.
This week on the Jersey Shore it was a "continued" episode. One of the housemates (Jenni) and her boyfriend (not on the show) broke up. Of course it was a messy break-up and they had a house together in Jersey. After the messy break-up, Jenni and her other housemate (Nicole or "Snookie") went to her house to check on things. Her boyfriend had taken quite a few things from her, including her bed. She broke down -- of course. They also had a visitor in the house, Rider, Snookie's best friend. It was Rider's birthday and she wanted to celebrate with her bestie. So they go out to a club like usual and the house couple --Sammi and Ronnie -- get into a drunken argument. Sammi does not get along with Jenni and she gets very upset with Ronnie when he is nice to her and talks to her. Sammi ends up punching Ronnie in the face and calling her mother to come pick her up. But the two end up making up and Sammi stays and fixes her problem with Jenni.
Another popular show is Teen Mom. Right now they are in the second season. This show is about girls who got pregnant in high school (they were on a previous MTV reality show 16 And Pregnant) and how they're lives have changed since then. This show is full of drama as well. Most of them have broken up with the baby daddy and are trying to "raise" a child, go to school, work, and have a social life. You can tell who really wants their child by how they rate their priorities. This week one of them, Jennelle, signed over temporary custody of her child to her mother. Not long ago I saw Jennelle in magazine article for smoking pot. Her priorities are straight. Also two of the girls got back together with the baby daddy. One of them treated her like she was nothing and also had nothing to do with their child, but according to these girls you cant stop love -- hahaha.
The reality shows that we see today consist of drama, and we like it because its not our drama. Next week I plan on talking about Survivor and The Bachelor.
Reality shows can be interesting, but I lost interest in them years ago. Big Brother was my show! I used to love it! Survivor too! Then after they both did their respective "Celebrity" show where past players came back to play together, I just lost interest.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading more!
Shows like Teen Mom just scare me. A girl who is 16 and pregnant should not be given a TV show and made out to look like a role model. Whether MTV intended for these girls to become icons or not, they have and they are influencing young girls way too much.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Hip-n-Healthy about the show Teen Mom. Terrifying! I think if I remember correctly, the first "reality" television show I watched was the Amazing Race.
ReplyDeleteI don't like reality tv shows! you're right they are ridiculous. i cant wait to hear about survivor... i used to watch that all the time.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Danielle. I used to actually watch reality TV some, but it just gets on my nerves now. It's all scripted!
ReplyDeleteIt cracks me up how some people think its actually reality lol cant tell you how many times I have had to break the news that its scripted.
ReplyDeleteI am ready to hear about the bachelor. Who wants to fight for a man that has to call his therapist after each individual date? And I actually watched my first episode of the pregnancy show the other day....all I have to say is oh wow.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear about the Bachelor!! I watch it every week and I LOVE Emily!
ReplyDeletei am interested in seeing where you will go with this
ReplyDelete"Reality shows" drive me crazy with their obvious scripted drama and conflict. Going with the theme of two previous comments...the teen pregnancy shows absolutely terrify me!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen a reality show I could bear. I watch TV and film most often to escape reality, for heaven's sake!
